MY FAVORITE THINGS 2019

MY FAVORITE THINGS 2019

I love the holiday season because it always feels like one big ol’ giant send off for the whole month before a new year begins. I’ve actually been sitting on this post for a while, but I wanted to share my 2019 faves before the year is out. Most everything on this list is fashion themed (no surprise here), but there’s one moment that had a big impact on me this year that had to make the list. Read on for my 2019 faves!

1. CHUNKY KNITS
We’re still a week and a half away from Winter, but we’ve already endured many days of below freezing temps here in the DC area. Chunky knits have become my go-to wardrobe choice to stay comfy on those cold days. I’d say that ASOS is my favorite online destination for everyday wear, and all of their chunky knits are good (and reasonably priced)! Shop them here.

2. SKIRTS, SKIRTS, SKIRTS!
THIS has been my latest obsession! Weird, I know, since skirts have been around since the 14th century, LOL. My faves are midi length, satin or pleated. Paired with a chunky knit (above), faux leather coat, and over the knee boots is how I plan on rocking this look for Winter. Check out the styles I bought this year (or some good dupes for those that are sold out).

3. ANIMAL TREND
This trend’s been gaining popularity over the past couple of years, but really took off in 2019. There literally is an animal print option for everything, and I’m here for all of it!

4. THE MINI BAG
Not particularly practical, but cute nonetheless, the mini bag secured the spot as my favorite accessory in 2019. I bought this Kate Spade mini crossbody over the Summer, and love it!

5. BROWN’S THE NEW BLACK
I love the warm tones of this updated basic for Fall/Winter. These were some of my favorite browns this season:

6. THE LEATHER DRESS
Leather has evolved beyond just outerwear, and it’s making quite a splash this season with tons of leather separates. I’m a big fan of the leather dress, in particular. It’s versatile, edgy, and when layered right, will take you effortlessly from daytime to a night out on the town.

7. SOCIAL MEDIA AWARD FOR TOP BLACK FASHION BLOGGER
Without question, the award goes to Monroe Steele, the self described writer, creator, YouTuber, and shoe collector. What I love about Monroe is how consistent she is at dropping quality content on all things fashion. She’s also very engaging and approachable on Instagram, which is always a plus! You can find her here on IG, or on her blog Fashion Steele NYC.

8. FASHION YOUTUBER OF THE YEAR
I swear, style expert Jenee of HighLowLuxxe fame, is the best Style and Beauty content creator on YouTube! Her videos are pretty much a how-to guide on looking chic, from the airport to work to festive holiday parties. She mixes high street fashion with thrift store finds, and affordable pieces for serious fashion inspo that’s totally relatable. Find her on YouTube here.

9. I QUIT!
This truly was a difficult decision, but after six and a half years, I closed the door to Couture Diva. It felt terrifying and liberating at the same time, but I’m sure it was the right decision for the space I’m in, in life now. I dedicated a whole post to this, so if you missed it, read it here.

Well, there you have it! 2019’s faves and most memorable moments in a nutshell. I hope you enjoyed reading this post. If you missed last year’s post, check it out here. Cheers to a purposeful 2020!

WHAT I’M BUYING FOR FALL

WHAT I’M BUYING FOR FALL

We’re already into the Fall season so it’s only fitting that I do some shopping to update my Fall wardrobe with a few items I already have my eye on. Thankfully, trends haven’t shifted that drastically since last year, so I don’t need to spend much to achieve refreshed Autumn looks. It works out perfectly too, because I’ve been focused this year on shopping intentionally, and only buying pieces that either fill a void in my wardrobe, or those that will get a lot of wear for the season. So, let’s get into it!

1. THE BOOT
I’m still obsessed with animal! But really, who isn’t?! I love that this trend can still be considered a classic, so the boots I’m buying will still be “style relevant” long after the animal craze is over.

This croc-embossed leather knee high‘s on my wishlist, and I plan on purchasing her at the end of the month. It’s chic yet affordable, and I know I’ll get a lot of wear out of them this season.

I tried getting in on the Western trend last year, but ended up returning the boots I bought. I love the animal/Western mix of these boots, and I can’t wait for them to arrive in the mail!

Patent leather’s been grabbing my attention recently, and more specifically this style of a patent ankle boot:

As much as I love the style, I just don’t see the boot fitting well into most of the looks I like, so I opted for these instead. They’ll get more wear, and will be more versatile for how I like to dress.

2. A GOOD SKIRT
I’m stocking up on pleated, slip, and skater skirts this season, because they’re too cute not to! I’m happy I got over the notion that skirts can’t be worn when it’s cold out, because they always look so chic when layered right. I plan on styling my skirts with chunky knits, knee high boots, leggings, a good trench, and maybe some leather! Here are a few of my faves…

3. THROWBACK EYEWEAR

Yes, accessories still matter in the Fall/Winter months. And even though it seems like we hardly see the sun once October rolls around, sunnies are still my go-to accessory to finish off a pulled together look.

4. TRENCH COATS
I’ve only had to bust out my trench coat once this season, but I’ve got my eye on these Fall staples.

What’s on your Fall shopping list? Share your faves in the comments below.

WHY I QUIT MY SIDE HUSTLE

So, it’s been over six years that I’ve been running Couture Diva, my online shop selling women’s clothing and accessories.

MY LATEST STUDIO PHOTOSHOOT

It’s been a while since I did a lifestyle photoshoot, and even longer since I’ve been inside a studio to sit in front of a camera to be the model!

WHY I QUIT MY SIDE HUSTLE

WHY I QUIT MY SIDE HUSTLE

So, it’s been over six years that I’ve been running Couture Diva, my online shop selling women’s clothing and accessories. It kinda sounds weird hearing this out loud, because even though there were countless late nights and early mornings “getting it done” in between ‘momming’ and working a full time job, it still doesn’t feel like it began that long ago!

I loved everything about being a part time entrepreneur. It has been exciting taking an idea from nothing, and watching it blossom into something that I can be proud of all these years later. The beginnings were very humble. In fact, it started with just a $1,000 investment, and an amateur garage photoshoot that still has me rolling on the floor with laughter to this day! Shortly after getting started, I got laid off from a cushy job that was specifically created for me (reader, beware of these), and so I had the time to learn Photoshop. I spent my days painstakingly editing subpar product images and perfecting them for the website. I got familiar with HTML, did most of the backend updates (before I could afford to pay someone to do it), and became the CEO, CFO, buyer, photographer, marketing department, and customer service rep. I was wearing all of these hats! I was also a fashion industry insider. I got the chance to see all the ready-to-wear trends from brands six months before they ended up on store shelves. It was very sexy….until it wasn’t.

Late last year I started experiencing a major burnout. I now know that’s what it was, but back then I’m sure I wasn’t the funnest person to be around. I was seriously unmotivated and I began to question everything I had been doing up until that point. Was it still worth it? During that time, I started receiving invites to trade shows for the upcoming fashion season. I decided I should attend at least one of them and began looking for a deal on an Amtrak ticket to New York. But when I found it, I physically couldn’t purchase the ticket. Something inside me wouldn’t let me. And I decided to go with my gut.

I spent the next few months enjoying my new found free time with my family and taking a couple of vacations, all while marginally keeping an eye on Couture Diva. The thing is, I didn’t miss it! I had lost the fire in my belly, and I really no longer wanted to do this.

At first I had to get over feeling guilty for quitting, and not seeing my dream through to the end. Plus, what would people think of me if I gave up? But that’s when I realized it’s OK to change your mind, and that sometimes you may not want the same things you wanted ten years ago. I now wanted to be more present for my family, and giving up this one thing helps me do that in the way that I need to be. And I’m A-OK with that!

Have you ever felt like you needed to give yourself permission to quit something you started? Let me hear about it in the comments below.

It’s been a while since I did a lifestyle photoshoot, and even longer since I’ve been inside a studio to sit in front of a camera to be the model!

But when a good photographer friend of mine asked me to pose for a project he was working on (and hopefully one that you’ll see in a museum some day), I had to oblige. After capturing the shots he needed, we had extra studio time to shoot some additional images. I’ve decided to share them on the blog, so here goes…

MONOCHROMATIC WHITE

MONOCHROMATIC WHITE

Late sunsets, rooftop parties, and crisp whites are just a few of my favorite things about Summer. This weekend, I got to experience “the trifecta” as the hubby and I hung out at the Wharf in DC for a much needed date night. I went for a clean monochromatic white look, with accessories that added a smidgen of color.

Check out that view! I’ve rounded up my favorite whites for the season, and I’m sharing them with you. Some are recent purchases that you’ll see me rocking if you follow me on Instagram, and others are still on my wishlist! Go ahead and get your Hot Girl Summer ON!

SUMMER PREP – DO THESE THREE THINGS NOW

SUMMER PREP – DO THESE THREE THINGS NOW

It’s the unofficial start of the Summer. I’m so excited about all the fun the warmer weather brings, but to be honest, I’m also a little nervous. Guess who’s been slacking on those #LevelUp 2019 goals? Me! Like, no motivation to do a thing, except to STOP, BREATHE, and just ENJOY the present.

It’s been therapeutic these last few months just slowing down, and taking the time to enjoy family life with a lot less stress! Now, with Summer fast approaching (I’ve still got a few weeks though till it’s really on), there are three things I plan on doing to help me make the most of the sunny season. Read on to find out…

1. SWITCHING UP MY SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Skin has different needs in cold, dry Winter months than when it’s warm out, and you’re frequently exposed to sweat, humidity, and irritants that can clog the pores. My skin is already telling me it’s time. I’ve lined up some new products I’ll be trying over the next few weeks that hopefully will come with positive reviews!

2. GETTING MY SUMMER BODY TIGHT!
Thankfully my inconsistency this year hasn’t set me back too far. I think prepping for an early Spring vacation may have helped to keep me on track! If you missed my posts on my trip to Colombia, catch them here and here. Consistency is key going forward, so I’ll be working hard on keeping those gym dates each week, no matter what!

3. PLAN A SUMMER ITINERARY
Having fun this Summer will NOT break the bank! I won’t allow that to happen because ending the year financially stronger than it started is still THE goal. With a well thought out itinerary, I plan on taking advantage of all the DMV has to offer (DC, Maryland, and Virginia, if you’re not local) . There are usually some pretty cool festivals, outdoor events, and concerts (for free or minimal cost) every Summer. And many are kid friendly too. You just need to find them!
