Hey, wanna know the secret to a happier life? It may not be as complicated as you think! Just take it from Scandinavians, who are the happiest people on Earth, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report. With long, cold Winters that leave them in up to seventeen hours of darkness daily, you may be thinking, what do they have to be happy about? But each year, this group of countries consistently ranks the highest in global happiness, and I’m going to tell you why!
What is Hygge?
Hygge, pronounced “hoo-gah”, is a Scandinavian concept or way of life that emphasizes finding joy in everyday moments. The word itself is almost impossible to define, but the concept is one that celebrates warmth, coziness, mindfulness, and creating intimacy in any given moment.
We’re just past the first month of Winter, so I thought it would be great to share some tips on how to hygge your way to happiness this season. We’re already hibernating, why not be happy about it too?
Practical Tips To Hygge In Winter Months
1. CANDLES….LOTS OF CANDLES!
Candles are the one thing most associated with hygge. The glow from candlelights creates a warm and inviting atmosphere on a Winter evening, so whether you’re entertaining, or dining alone, try cooking a delicious meal, then eating by candlelight.
2. HYGGE WITH YOUR TRIBE
There’s a Jamaican proverb “good friends are better than pocket money”. Invite those friends over, cook a meal together, then cozy up by the fireplace to eat and enjoy intimate conversation. No screens allowed!
3. ADD SOME TEXTURE TO YOUR HOME
Warm color palettes are typical hygge decor, so consider adding some of these elements into your home. Logs for the fireplace are an easy way to do this, so is adding some texture with blankets, throw pillows, and a fur area rug. Tip: cozy up by the fireplace with some hot chocolate and a good movie for a date night in.
4. SLEEP IN
When’s the last time you had breakfast in bed? Instead of rushing out of bed on the weekend, why not stay in and catch up on that book you’ve been meaning to get to? Be kind and allow yourself to enjoy life’s little pleasures. Light a candle or two, and be sure to stay under cozy covers for that extra hygge feeling.
5. CREATE SOMETHING…ANYTHING!
Write a poem, bake some bread, knit a scarf. Whatever your preference, this is a great way to enjoy the hygge concept, and it’s also the perfect way to squeeze some quality family time in.
I hope these tips will help make this Winter a happier one for you! Which one was your favorite? Leave a comment, let me know which tip you tried.
