This past weekend I spent quite a bit of time getting a jump start on my Spring cleaning. I started in the most obvious place…my closet! I got rid of ELEVEN pairs of shoes, plus sweaters, dresses and blouses that were just clutter preventing me from seeing a few treasures hiding in plain sight.

As temps slowly head north, my excitement for dressing for the upcoming season, and enjoying the outdoors is building in momentum. There are so many fun, flirty, fearless options to express yourself, thanks to the bold accessories trends on the horizon. I’ll be doing an upcoming post on this so stay tuned. In the meantime, try these tips to de-clutter your closet to get the most fashionable wear out of your wardrobe now.

1. Be Ruthless
I mean it! If you don’t love it, haven’t worn it in the past six months, or can’t see yourself wearing it any time soon, toss it. Goodwill donations are tax deductible. Plus that top/dress/jacket will be better appreciated by someone actually wearing it.

2. Get It Together
Confession: I’m a little nutty when it comes to organization. My life’s motto is “there’s a place for everything, and everything in its place”. So, of course, this part was fun for me! However, if cataloging and organizing aren’t your thing, here’s how I got it together:

i. Divvy clothes in sections. I chose three sections: dresses and skirts, tops, pants.

ii. Organize each section by color and length. Visually, this is the most appealing to me. If sorting each section by type only (example: tops organized by tanks, dress shirts, jackets) works better for you, do that! The idea is to organize according to what works best for your lifestyle.

iii. Shoes. Can’t forget about shoes! The shoes I’m wearing the most often for the season are usually more accessible. The rest are categorized by type.

3. Have Fun With It
Now that you’ve de-cluttered and are organized, have some fun! Look through your “new” wardrobe to discover fresh styling options you couldn’t see before, preferably with a glass of wine and music. Play dress-up, or outfit plan for the week ahead. This is also where you’ll spot deficiencies in your wardrobe so you can be more purposeful on future shopping trips.
