THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

In the spirit of Christmas, I’ve decided to share a few of my fashionable faves in this post. Let’s dig in!

1. STATEMENT EYEWEAR

Sunnies and clear lenses have always been my go-to accessories, there’s no denying that. They’re such an easy and effortless way to add polish to an outfit, or to differentiate yourself from the crowd. In the Winter months we put away so many of our accessories in favor of outerwear and boots, but eyewear transitions from season to season. These standouts are a few of my faves:

Flared Visor, Hindsight Square, Pared Cat Eye, Chanel Shield, Crawford Tort, Gucci Square, Oliver Peoples

2. THE PERFECT TOPPERS
Thankfully, I’ve always had a good head for hats! I fell in love with this plush faux fur cabby hat the minute I laid my hands on it at the Forever21 store in Bethesda. It has a great ’90’s vibe going that I’m really into now. Plus it keeps my “thinker” warm and cozy. Fashionable and functional!

Western details were all over the runways earlier this year for the Autumn/Winter shows, and it’s been pretty hard to miss on the street (saddle bags, denim, the COWBOY BOOT!). This isn’t a trend I plan on investing too heavily in (it’s just not my aesthetic), but I love a good cowboy hat. The hat below is new in my online shop, Couture Diva. It’s not exactly a cowboy hat, but it has enough Western details that paired with a printed scarf and waist cinching belt, I’d be able to rock the trend without the expensive investment.

3. MISMATCHED EARRINGS
I don’t know what it is about this trend, but I’m really in love with it. The trend is a couple of seasons old, but what’s attracting me to it now is the playful, unexpected, funk factor it adds to my ensembles! Not sure how you’d pull it off? While there aren’t any hard and fast rules, the trick is symmetry. And a full length mirror! I hold the mismatched pair up to my ears (after I’m fully dressed), and allow my eye to determine if it will work for my style.

Have some fun creating mismatched pairs with these trendy baubles:

Gwyet Green, Flomiyu Floral, Clackamas, Key Drop, Hexagon Hoop, Wywen, Gwililla

THE LOOK

Check Wide Leg Trousers, Thrifted ‘Security’ Raincoat, Mock Turtleneck Sweatshirt (similar), Faux Fur Cabby Hat, Bee Mine Pearl Studded Handbag (Sold Out), Oversized Clear Lens (Old), Adidas Sneakers, Interlaced Earrings

4. OUTERWEAR IN BOLD COLORS
Winter and bold colors don’t typically go hand in hand. It’s unexpected, and that’s why I love it. This oversized bright yellow “Security” raincoat was thrifted (and new) from one of the local Goodwill stores in my neighborhood, but here are a few colorful coats you might like too.

Teddy Bomber, Faux Fur, Animal Print Puffer, Double Faced Fur, Vinyl Puffer, Velvet Frock Coat, Leopard Print Mac, Flock Chain Puffer, Brushed Wool, Longline Check

What are some of your favorite things? Did any of mine make your list this year?

CLEAR SKIN BEAUTY REGIMEN

CLEAR SKIN BEAUTY REGIMEN

I recently did a photoshoot for a hair company website launch and was pleasantly taken aback when the makeup artist exclaimed how flawless my skin was! A year ago, my skin was telling a very different story. I was a thirty something year old woman still struggling with acne. I would suffer from breakouts every couple of weeks. Certain areas of my face had dry spots, and it was too oily in others. I just wasn’t loving the skin I was in. Not sure that I wanted to go the prescription route, I pushed back those misgivings and headed to my dermatologist anyway, who quickly prescribed a cream I was to use every other day. It didn’t work. On the contrary, it intensified my acne problem!

That’s when I decided to get back to basics. I didn’t really have a skin care regimen outside of cleansing and moisturizing. But what I realized then is that my skin was screaming to me that it needed some more TLC. I chose SheaMoisture products for two reasons: I trust the brand, and I know its ingredients are specially formulated for my skin type.

The New Regimen
Cleanse/Exfoliate – I use the Bamboo Charcoal Detoxifying Foaming Facial Wash twice daily to cleanse. The Clarifying Facial Wash & Scrub, I use it up to two times per week to gently slough off any dead skin cells.

Tone – The Problem Skin Toner works well after cleansing to remove any makeup and impurities that the cleanser may have missed. It also helps to give me an even, blemish free skin tone.

Moisturize – I love the smell and texture of the Bamboo Charcoal Gelee Moisturizer. It’s lightweight and feels great on my face.

Special Treatments – I like to treat myself to masks every week or so, and the Clarifying Mud Mask is perfect for that luxurious spa feel.

It didn’t take long for my skin to start feeling softer, but it was about another two weeks before I could see the noticeable differences. I’ve been using SheaMoisture skin care products consistently for a year now and I’m in love with the results!

What are some of your favorite skin care products?

YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY OUTFIT GUIDE

YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY OUTFIT GUIDE

We’re in the festive season y’all! Cue the twinkling lights and Mariah Carey’s Christmas album, I’m ready! My tree is already up too. The only thing left to roll in are all the holiday party invites, and I’m prepping myself for them. Now, I don’t plan on breaking the bank on outfits this year (I reserved that vice for gift shopping). Instead I’m adding a few on trend, festive pieces that I can incorporate into my wardrobe for multiple fresh, party-polished looks.

THE LOOK
Vintage Tweed Blazer, Floral Lace Midi Dress, Velvet Leggings, Vintage Beaded Pouch Purse (similar), Caged Heel Sandals (old, try this pair)

Need some help picking the perfect party’fits for the Holidays? Try these tips:

1. Add an eye catching blazer over an LBD (Little Black Dress), slip dress, or pleated skirt.

Floral Printed, Velvet Checked, Long Houndstooth, Bonded Velvet

2. Layer with lace. I know, this is an unexpected fabric to wear during the Winter, but that’s what’s great about it. Try layering it over top leggings, or a button down shirt for extra texture and volume to your look.

Lace Shirt Dress, Lace Trim Slip Dress, Victorian Blouse, Sheer Lace Bodysuit

3. Top it off with a pretty little purse.

Beaded purses were all the rage this Summer. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still rock them in colder temps. My beaded pouch purse above is one of my latest vintage finds from the cutest shop JuJu’s Vintage in Chicago.

Tip: If you can’t find a pretty little beaded number, go for anything textured. Think pearl studded, sequined, or velvet.

Velvet Bead Bag, Two Tone Beaded Bag, Sequined Bucket Bag, Pearl Studded Bucket Bag

10 RECIPES TO WARM THE SOUL

10 RECIPES TO WARM THE SOUL

Thanksgiving Day is less than a week away! It’s almost as if I never saw it coming, like where did the year go?! If you live in the US, you know Thanksgiving officially ushers in the month long Christmas Holiday festivities. And, as we near the beginning of my favorite time of year, I’m craving all things warm and cozy (READ: lots of food, family, friends, and DRINKS!). In this post, I’m sharing ten of my favorite recipes that are guaranteed to warm your tummy AND your soul. While I can’t claim credit for their yumminess, I can certainly vouch for it. I’ve personally tried each of these recipes, and they are part of my repertoire when entertaining family and friends. Note: these are NOT listed in order of deliciousness. Feel free to try them in any particular order. Let’s dig in!

1. LEFTOVER TURKEY & DUMPLING SOUP

Notes: This is the perfect way to re-purpose all of that leftover Thanksgiving turkey! I don’t really care for turkey that much so I substituted for roasted chicken, and added a little Jamaican Hot Pepper Sauce for more heat.

2. ROASTED GARLIC MACARONI & CHEESE

Notes: This recipe is a little labor intensive, but the flavor is worth it! Mac and cheese is my contribution this year to the Thanksgiving table, and this is the recipe I’m going with.

3. BROWN BUTTER GARLIC CARROTS

Notes: You know how hard it is to fit veggies on your Thanksgiving plate, right? This recipe makes it easy AND delicious to enjoy them!

4. SLOW COOKER BARBACOA BEEF

Notes: Slow cooker recipes during the Fall & Winter are the best. Minimal effort, lots of flavor, like this Mexican beef that’s super juicy and flavorful.

5. SPICY CHICKEN PLANTAIN SOUP

Notes: I’ve been curating recipes for years and this is a favorite I cut out from an Essence magazine issue some time ago. Kale isn’t my favorite leafy green so I substituted for spinach instead.

6. SWEET POTATO HASH

Notes: A breakfast or brunch favorite you can prep the night before, refrigerate, then plop right into the oven in the morning. I didn’t use sausages in this recipe as I wanted to make it vegetarian friendly.

7. BAKED ZITI

Notes: A fancy twist on the Italian American classic, this one’s a favorite in my home.

8. CHEESY MINI SPINACH FRITTATAS

Notes: I tried this recipe earlier in the year when we hosted friends for brunch. I’ve varied this recipe by adding diced tomatoes and cream cheese, and it’s good no matter how you make it!

9. JAMAICAN CHRISTMAS FRUIT CAKE

Notes: I’m not quite sure how my Mom made baking this cake look so easy! And I never saw her using a recipe book either. I was determined to bake this cake on my own a few years ago, and used this recipe from the cookbook: The Real Taste of Jamaica by Enid Donaldson.

10. JAMAICAN SORREL

Notes: If you’ve never heard of sorrel, it’s the official drink of Christmas in Jamaica. Many recipes exist, like this one, but I believe sorrel is best enjoyed with just five simple ingredients: sorrel, water, fresh ginger root, Wray & Nephew Overproof Jamaican White Rum, and sugar. All other ingredients listed in the linked recipe, for me, are optional!

Drop me a line! Let me know which ones you tried. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did!

FESTIVE SWEATERS

FESTIVE SWEATERS

‘Tis the season for festive sweaters! I love seeing rich, bold colors stand out against the drab, and sometimes snowy, landscape characteristic of the Winter months. There’s something so unexpected about that bright pop of color that livens me up, and gets me even more excited about the upcoming Christmas holidays. Now, a festive sweater doesn’t necessarily mean an “ugly sweater”. There are lots of stylish options you’ll actually want to wear this holiday season, and I already have my eye on a few!

This wool turtleneck is a vintage Pierre Cardin I picked up on a recent trip to Chicago. I love the color blocking (in my favorite colors too), and the balloon sleeve just cinches it for me! The perfect festive sweaters are shimmery (read sequin or tinsel), in bright hues, and rich in whimsical details. Here are a few on my wishlist you might also consider getting. What do you think of these?

sweater with bow, sweater with heart beading, snoopy jacquard sweater, sequin argyle sweater, crocheted fruits sweater, textured tinsel sweater

OR

Kick it up a dressier notch with these sequined “baddies”!

gold sequin sweater, sequin confetti sweater, sequin diamond sweater, floral sequin sweater

My favorite way to style a festive sweater is layered over top a midi dress or pleated skirt, with an ankle boot. Try these styles to complete the look.

snakeskin cowboy boots, lion buckle belt, bow stud earrings, high ankle cuff boot, asymmetrical shell earrings, print pleated skirt, textured link necklace, red embossed ankle boot, leopard maxi, textured translucent earrings, geometric print tunic, belted plaid skirt
