MARRIAGE TO A TYPE A WIFE – THE SURVIVAL GUIDE

MARRIAGE TO A TYPE A WIFE – THE SURVIVAL GUIDE

Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day! In the spirit of this holiday I’m writing a fun post on how to survive marriage to a Type A wife. Disclaimer: I’m neither a marriage nor relationship expert. In fact, my husband is the only man I’ve had a long term (over 1 year) relationship with! These are just some observations I’ve made about myself and marriage over the past few years. I hope you have some fun with it!

Let’s just get this out there…I am a Type A wife. To be completely honest, I really do enjoy a lot of the personality traits that make me Type A, like my competitive drive, discipline to succeed, and how considerate I am of my loved ones. This temperament, however, doesn’t always make for the most harmonious home. Here are a few things to know about us Type A wives:

1. WE LOVE BEING IN CONTROL, AND THAT’S NOT GOING TO CHANGE!
So here’s the thing, Type A’s crave order and would create a plan to account for every minute of the day, if only time allowed! It’s because we are very uncomfortable with uncertainty, and excessive free time, which can seem like we’re not being productive (another obsession of alphas). Fortunately, most Type A wives realize that we can’t control everything, especially one married for more than a week, or has kids. Here’s a little secret: we want to be in control in every area of our lives, BUT NOT IN OUR MARRIAGE! Most of us are bossy babes (cue Kelis’ I’m Bossy soundtrack), but we want our husbands to lead. The trick is to provide us with some much needed balance, but come armed with a solid plan! Type A wives are more likely to release the reigns of control when we see a well though out plan from the hubs. Greg knows there’s a stronger chance I’ll be agreeable to one of his proposals when he already has the answers to the questions he knows I’m gonna ask.

2. TYPE A WIVES LOVE ATTENTION, SO GIVE IT TO US
All women love attention. Heck, everyone loves attention! But what I’m talking about here is attentiveness. Pay real attention to us, SEE us! Sure, I love it when Greg says “oh, that’s a hot outfit”, or when he ogles me when I’m sauntering around our bedroom sans clothes. What really gets me googly eyed about him though, is when I see him making an effort to anticipate my needs, and fulfill them. That tells me he’s been listening to me, which in turn makes me feel valued by him. It’s especially important for a Type A wife to feel valued by her husband, that all of our efforts to make our family life perfect, matter to him too.

3. KNOW WHEN TO HOLD ‘EM, KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM, KNOW WHEN TO WALK AWAY…
I won’t finish the line to that Kenny Rogers’ song. Even though most Type A wives have a little ‘crazy’ in us, hopefully there’s no running away from us! I saved this one for the last because it’s just something husbands will have to learn over time. With lots and lots of patience, and consistent practice of the above, husbands of Type A wives can learn when to leave us be, when to “check” us, and when to hold us down. And hopefully we’re not making it too hard for them by giving them cues when they get it right.

There’s no doubt that marriage is hard, no matter your personality trait. And none of the above will matter if you both don’t want to be together and aren’t willing to fight for what you have.

Did you enjoy this post? Drop a comment below, let me know your thoughts! I’d love to hear about any marriage observations/tips you’d like to share too.

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU COZY UP TO WINTER

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU COZY UP TO WINTER

Hey, wanna know the secret to a happier life? It may not be as complicated as you think! Just take it from Scandinavians, who are the happiest people on Earth, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report. With long, cold Winters that leave them in up to seventeen hours of darkness daily, you may be thinking, what do they have to be happy about? But each year, this group of countries consistently ranks the highest in global happiness, and I’m going to tell you why!

What is Hygge?

Hygge, pronounced “hoo-gah”, is a Scandinavian concept or way of life that emphasizes finding joy in everyday moments. The word itself is almost impossible to define, but the concept is one that celebrates warmth, coziness, mindfulness, and creating intimacy in any given moment.

We’re just past the first month of Winter, so I thought it would be great to share some tips on how to hygge your way to happiness this season. We’re already hibernating, why not be happy about it too?

Practical Tips To Hygge In Winter Months

1. CANDLES….LOTS OF CANDLES!
Candles are the one thing most associated with hygge. The glow from candlelights creates a warm and inviting atmosphere on a Winter evening, so whether you’re entertaining, or dining alone, try cooking a delicious meal, then eating by candlelight.

2. HYGGE WITH YOUR TRIBE
There’s a Jamaican proverb “good friends are better than pocket money”. Invite those friends over, cook a meal together, then cozy up by the fireplace to eat and enjoy intimate conversation. No screens allowed!

3. ADD SOME TEXTURE TO YOUR HOME
Warm color palettes are typical hygge decor, so consider adding some of these elements into your home. Logs for the fireplace are an easy way to do this, so is adding some texture with blankets, throw pillows, and a fur area rug. Tip: cozy up by the fireplace with some hot chocolate and a good movie for a date night in.

4. SLEEP IN
When’s the last time you had breakfast in bed? Instead of rushing out of bed on the weekend, why not stay in and catch up on that book you’ve been meaning to get to? Be kind and allow yourself to enjoy life’s little pleasures. Light a candle or two, and be sure to stay under cozy covers for that extra hygge feeling.

5. CREATE SOMETHING…ANYTHING!
Write a poem, bake some bread, knit a scarf. Whatever your preference, this is a great way to enjoy the hygge concept, and it’s also the perfect way to squeeze some quality family time in.

I hope these tips will help make this Winter a happier one for you! Which one was your favorite? Leave a comment, let me know which tip you tried.

LIVING MY FITTEST LIFE NOW

LIVING MY FITTEST LIFE NOW

I’m entering my 40th year in 2019. Since I became an adult (legally of course, maturity had nothing to do with it), this milestone age would be when I would’ve achieved all of my life goals. Thank God I’ve grown up since then, but turning the big 4-0 is still a pretty big deal for me! So, I’m dedicating the entire year to becoming the best version of myself. And it starts with my physique.

I maintain a pretty healthy lifestyle. At least, I think so. My workout regimen isn’t as consistent as I’d like it to be, but life happens. Thankfully, part of “life happening” is chasing after four year old twin boys and rough-housing with them, which keeps my metabolism high most of the time. Since having kids, doing these two things has helped to keep me in shape over the past two years:

1. MICRO WORKOUTS
These are short high intensity workouts lasting less than ten minutes, but are very effective to keep your heart rate up and your full body engaged, especially when you don’t have plenty of time for a full workout. I do micro workouts three mornings per week, and again in the evening, if I don’t get a lunchtime workout in.

2. MEAL PLANNING
Planning ahead of time what I will be eating for the day helps to keep me from making decisions about what to put in my mouth when I’m starving (they’re usually regrettable choices). I aim to eat six meals per day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are slightly bigger meals, but I snack on foods that are rich in fiber and protein to stave off hunger and keep my energy up.

I’m taking it to the next level for my 40th year, so I teamed up with a friend of mine, Sade, to help me live my fittest life now. Sade is a competitive Bikini BodyBuilder, a certified personal trainer and nutritionist with a passion for inspiring others to live a healthy lifestyle in and outside of the gym.

We met up at a Gold’s Gym outside of Washington DC, known for being a bodybuilders’ gym, for a workout session.

Sade taught me the proper techniques and form for completing various exercises targeting my glutes, to help me make the most of my weight training. We also did a few circuit exercises together to help me build a stronger core.

I’ve always loved weight training, and I can’t wait to implement these tips into my regimen this year! There are a few other things I plan on doing this year as well to help me get maximum results for my efforts, and I’m sharing them with you:

1. JANUARY FAST/CLEANSE
Admittedly, this one isn’t new. It’s something I picked up a few years ago, loved it, and have been doing it since. Come January 2 (because who isn’t toasting at midnight?!), I try my best to abstain from alcohol, processed meat, junk food, and anything really that isn’t nutritious. I stick to healthy snacking and meals, like fruits and nuts, Greek yogurt, lean meats, and simple carbs. I also load up on veggies, fresh or cooked works for me. Setting this tone helps to keep me on track for the rest of the year.

2. EATING A BALANCED SIX
I mentioned above how eating six small(ish) meals per day helped to whip me in shape after birthing twins. In the spirit of transparency, I haven’t followed this “tip” since Thanksgiving, but I’m starting it up again this month.

3. ADDING THESE SUPPLEMENTS
I learned about Best BCAA by BPI Sports from watching one of Sade’s YouTube videos. It helps to prevent loss of muscle mass while burning calories during cardio workouts. I want to maintain muscle mass, while burning fat, so I’ll add one scoop to my water and drink before, during, and post cardio work in the morning. For days I plan on weight training, I’ll take a capsule of Acetyl-L-Carnitine to aid performance.

4. MORNING HIIT WORKOUTS
I’m not a morning person, so this one’s gonna be a toughy! But I know the results are guaranteed. If you aren’t familiar, HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training, is a cardio strategy of alternating short periods of high intensity aerobic exercises with less intense recovery periods. This strategy is highly effective (and popular), and has even more benefits when done first thing in the morning to burn fat stored overnight (as opposed to burning off that bagel you had for breakfast).

So there you have it, my blueprint for building a lean, mean physique, and living my fittest life in 2019! It’s going to be a challenge, but most importantly, it’s going to be fun. Especially when I start seeing results! Leave a comment, let me know if you’ve been inspired to live your fittest life this year.

TOP TEN 2018

2018’s almost a wrap! Whatever your plans/goals/resolutions were, I hope you were able to crush them in fearless style! This was a big year for me. I started this blog, my family settled into our new home, I saw my twin babies (now four year old boys, ahhh!) reach many milestones, AND I still managed to grow my online accessories shop! Of course, there were challenges; many high highs, and low lows. Wanna know the best part? It’s my personal growth from trusting my gut, taking a leap, and committing to doing the thing I’m passionate about, especially in those moments that didn’t feel quite so ‘sexy’.

I already have big plans for 2019. “Level Up” is the theme I’ve chosen for the year. I’m putting it out in the universe to force myself to be accountable. I think I’ll check this post in six months to gauge my progress!

I’ve been taking a look back at some of the most memorable moments in 2018 (the ones that gave me goosebumps), and I’m sharing my top ten:

1. Boo’d Up by Ella Mai. It’s arguably the official song of 2018, and the one that got the most play in my iTunes library.

2. The Royal Wedding of Meghan and Prince Harry was a fairytale come true! Their union bucked centuries old traditions, and The Duchess became the first woman of color in the British royal family. I wrote all about it here.

3. A Savage runway. Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty runway show celebrated all women like none I have ever seen. Her muse, Slick Woods, literally left the runway to give birth!

4. Speaking of fashion, the industry made strides this year to be more inclusive/diverse (Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton, Dapper Dan x Gucci, Edward Enninful/British Vogue) , but there’s still more work to be done.

5. Just Do It! Nike showed us what modern corporate social activism looks like by doing an ad campaign starring Colin Kaepernick. It paid off!

6. The Me Too Movement became a force to be reckoned with. Women started speaking up against sexual assault and harassment, and powerful men are paying for their misconduct.

7. Christine Blasey Ford.

8. We rocked the vote! The 2018 midterm election was a historical one with record voter turnout. 49% of eligible voters (113 million) showed up at the polls to let our voices be heard.

9. The Black Panther was more than just the best selling movie of 2018, it was a movement! And it’s the only film I’ve gone to see twice at the theater!

10. Hollywood creative geniuses like Ava Duvernay, Ryan Coogler, Jordan Peele, and Issa Rae continued to show the world what we already knew…our stories are marketable, and black and brown acting leads can (and do) sell out box offices.

May this holiday season fill your home with joy, your heart with love, and your life with laughter. Cheers!

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

In the spirit of Christmas, I’ve decided to share a few of my fashionable faves in this post. Let’s dig in!

1. STATEMENT EYEWEAR

Sunnies and clear lenses have always been my go-to accessories, there’s no denying that. They’re such an easy and effortless way to add polish to an outfit, or to differentiate yourself from the crowd. In the Winter months we put away so many of our accessories in favor of outerwear and boots, but eyewear transitions from season to season. These standouts are a few of my faves:

Flared Visor, Hindsight Square, Pared Cat Eye, Chanel Shield, Crawford Tort, Gucci Square, Oliver Peoples

2. THE PERFECT TOPPERS
Thankfully, I’ve always had a good head for hats! I fell in love with this plush faux fur cabby hat the minute I laid my hands on it at the Forever21 store in Bethesda. It has a great ’90’s vibe going that I’m really into now. Plus it keeps my “thinker” warm and cozy. Fashionable and functional!

Western details were all over the runways earlier this year for the Autumn/Winter shows, and it’s been pretty hard to miss on the street (saddle bags, denim, the COWBOY BOOT!). This isn’t a trend I plan on investing too heavily in (it’s just not my aesthetic), but I love a good cowboy hat. The hat below is new in my online shop, Couture Diva. It’s not exactly a cowboy hat, but it has enough Western details that paired with a printed scarf and waist cinching belt, I’d be able to rock the trend without the expensive investment.

The West Is History Braided Hat at Couture Diva

3. MISMATCHED EARRINGS
I don’t know what it is about this trend, but I’m really in love with it. The trend is a couple of seasons old, but what’s attracting me to it now is the playful, unexpected, funk factor it adds to my ensembles! Not sure how you’d pull it off? While there aren’t any hard and fast rules, the trick is symmetry. And a full length mirror! I hold the mismatched pair up to my ears (after I’m fully dressed), and allow my eye to determine if it will work for my style.

Have some fun creating mismatched pairs with these trendy baubles:

Gwyet Green, Flomiyu Floral, Clackamas, Key Drop, Hexagon Hoop, Wywen, Gwililla

THE LOOK

Check Wide Leg Trousers, Thrifted ‘Security’ Raincoat, Mock Turtleneck Sweatshirt (similar), Faux Fur Cabby Hat, Bee Mine Pearl Studded Handbag (Sold Out), Oversized Clear Lens (Old), Adidas Sneakers, Interlaced Earrings

4. OUTERWEAR IN BOLD COLORS
Winter and bold colors don’t typically go hand in hand. It’s unexpected, and that’s why I love it. This oversized bright yellow “Security” raincoat was thrifted (and new) from one of the local Goodwill stores in my neighborhood, but here are a few colorful coats you might like too.

Teddy Bomber, Faux Fur, Animal Print Puffer, Double Faced Fur, Vinyl Puffer, Velvet Frock Coat, Leopard Print Mac, Flock Chain Puffer, Brushed Wool, Longline Check

What are some of your favorite things? Did any of mine make your list this year?
