MARRIAGE TO A TYPE A WIFE – THE SURVIVAL GUIDE

MARRIAGE TO A TYPE A WIFE – THE SURVIVAL GUIDE

Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day! In the spirit of this holiday I’m writing a fun post on how to survive marriage to a Type A wife. Disclaimer: I’m neither a marriage nor relationship expert. In fact, my husband is the only man I’ve had a long term (over 1 year) relationship with! These are just some observations I’ve made about myself and marriage over the past few years. I hope you have some fun with it!

Let’s just get this out there…I am a Type A wife. To be completely honest, I really do enjoy a lot of the personality traits that make me Type A, like my competitive drive, discipline to succeed, and how considerate I am of my loved ones. This temperament, however, doesn’t always make for the most harmonious home. Here are a few things to know about us Type A wives:

1. WE LOVE BEING IN CONTROL, AND THAT’S NOT GOING TO CHANGE!
So here’s the thing, Type A’s crave order and would create a plan to account for every minute of the day, if only time allowed! It’s because we are very uncomfortable with uncertainty, and excessive free time, which can seem like we’re not being productive (another obsession of alphas). Fortunately, most Type A wives realize that we can’t control everything, especially one married for more than a week, or has kids. Here’s a little secret: we want to be in control in every area of our lives, BUT NOT IN OUR MARRIAGE! Most of us are bossy babes (cue Kelis’ I’m Bossy soundtrack), but we want our husbands to lead. The trick is to provide us with some much needed balance, but come armed with a solid plan! Type A wives are more likely to release the reigns of control when we see a well though out plan from the hubs. Greg knows there’s a stronger chance I’ll be agreeable to one of his proposals when he already has the answers to the questions he knows I’m gonna ask.

2. TYPE A WIVES LOVE ATTENTION, SO GIVE IT TO US
All women love attention. Heck, everyone loves attention! But what I’m talking about here is attentiveness. Pay real attention to us, SEE us! Sure, I love it when Greg says “oh, that’s a hot outfit”, or when he ogles me when I’m sauntering around our bedroom sans clothes. What really gets me googly eyed about him though, is when I see him making an effort to anticipate my needs, and fulfill them. That tells me he’s been listening to me, which in turn makes me feel valued by him. It’s especially important for a Type A wife to feel valued by her husband, that all of our efforts to make our family life perfect, matter to him too.

3. KNOW WHEN TO HOLD ‘EM, KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM, KNOW WHEN TO WALK AWAY…
I won’t finish the line to that Kenny Rogers’ song. Even though most Type A wives have a little ‘crazy’ in us, hopefully there’s no running away from us! I saved this one for the last because it’s just something husbands will have to learn over time. With lots and lots of patience, and consistent practice of the above, husbands of Type A wives can learn when to leave us be, when to “check” us, and when to hold us down. And hopefully we’re not making it too hard for them by giving them cues when they get it right.

There’s no doubt that marriage is hard, no matter your personality trait. And none of the above will matter if you both don’t want to be together and aren’t willing to fight for what you have.

Did you enjoy this post? Drop a comment below, let me know your thoughts! I’d love to hear about any marriage observations/tips you’d like to share too.

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU COZY UP TO WINTER

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU COZY UP TO WINTER

Hey, wanna know the secret to a happier life? It may not be as complicated as you think! Just take it from Scandinavians, who are the happiest people on Earth, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report. With long, cold Winters that leave them in up to seventeen hours of darkness daily, you may be thinking, what do they have to be happy about? But each year, this group of countries consistently ranks the highest in global happiness, and I’m going to tell you why!

What is Hygge?

Hygge, pronounced “hoo-gah”, is a Scandinavian concept or way of life that emphasizes finding joy in everyday moments. The word itself is almost impossible to define, but the concept is one that celebrates warmth, coziness, mindfulness, and creating intimacy in any given moment.

We’re just past the first month of Winter, so I thought it would be great to share some tips on how to hygge your way to happiness this season. We’re already hibernating, why not be happy about it too?

Practical Tips To Hygge In Winter Months

1. CANDLES….LOTS OF CANDLES!
Candles are the one thing most associated with hygge. The glow from candlelights creates a warm and inviting atmosphere on a Winter evening, so whether you’re entertaining, or dining alone, try cooking a delicious meal, then eating by candlelight.

2. HYGGE WITH YOUR TRIBE
There’s a Jamaican proverb “good friends are better than pocket money”. Invite those friends over, cook a meal together, then cozy up by the fireplace to eat and enjoy intimate conversation. No screens allowed!

3. ADD SOME TEXTURE TO YOUR HOME
Warm color palettes are typical hygge decor, so consider adding some of these elements into your home. Logs for the fireplace are an easy way to do this, so is adding some texture with blankets, throw pillows, and a fur area rug. Tip: cozy up by the fireplace with some hot chocolate and a good movie for a date night in.

4. SLEEP IN
When’s the last time you had breakfast in bed? Instead of rushing out of bed on the weekend, why not stay in and catch up on that book you’ve been meaning to get to? Be kind and allow yourself to enjoy life’s little pleasures. Light a candle or two, and be sure to stay under cozy covers for that extra hygge feeling.

5. CREATE SOMETHING…ANYTHING!
Write a poem, bake some bread, knit a scarf. Whatever your preference, this is a great way to enjoy the hygge concept, and it’s also the perfect way to squeeze some quality family time in.

I hope these tips will help make this Winter a happier one for you! Which one was your favorite? Leave a comment, let me know which tip you tried.

10 RECIPES TO WARM THE SOUL

10 RECIPES TO WARM THE SOUL

Thanksgiving Day is less than a week away! It’s almost as if I never saw it coming, like where did the year go?! If you live in the US, you know Thanksgiving officially ushers in the month long Christmas Holiday festivities. And, as we near the beginning of my favorite time of year, I’m craving all things warm and cozy (READ: lots of food, family, friends, and DRINKS!). In this post, I’m sharing ten of my favorite recipes that are guaranteed to warm your tummy AND your soul. While I can’t claim credit for their yumminess, I can certainly vouch for it. I’ve personally tried each of these recipes, and they are part of my repertoire when entertaining family and friends. Note: these are NOT listed in order of deliciousness. Feel free to try them in any particular order. Let’s dig in!

1. LEFTOVER TURKEY & DUMPLING SOUP

Notes: This is the perfect way to re-purpose all of that leftover Thanksgiving turkey! I don’t really care for turkey that much so I substituted for roasted chicken, and added a little Jamaican Hot Pepper Sauce for more heat.

2. ROASTED GARLIC MACARONI & CHEESE

Notes: This recipe is a little labor intensive, but the flavor is worth it! Mac and cheese is my contribution this year to the Thanksgiving table, and this is the recipe I’m going with.

3. BROWN BUTTER GARLIC CARROTS

Notes: You know how hard it is to fit veggies on your Thanksgiving plate, right? This recipe makes it easy AND delicious to enjoy them!

4. SLOW COOKER BARBACOA BEEF

Notes: Slow cooker recipes during the Fall & Winter are the best. Minimal effort, lots of flavor, like this Mexican beef that’s super juicy and flavorful.

5. SPICY CHICKEN PLANTAIN SOUP

Notes: I’ve been curating recipes for years and this is a favorite I cut out from an Essence magazine issue some time ago. Kale isn’t my favorite leafy green so I substituted for spinach instead.

6. SWEET POTATO HASH

Notes: A breakfast or brunch favorite you can prep the night before, refrigerate, then plop right into the oven in the morning. I didn’t use sausages in this recipe as I wanted to make it vegetarian friendly.

7. BAKED ZITI

Notes: A fancy twist on the Italian American classic, this one’s a favorite in my home.

8. CHEESY MINI SPINACH FRITTATAS

Notes: I tried this recipe earlier in the year when we hosted friends for brunch. I’ve varied this recipe by adding diced tomatoes and cream cheese, and it’s good no matter how you make it!

9. JAMAICAN CHRISTMAS FRUIT CAKE

Notes: I’m not quite sure how my Mom made baking this cake look so easy! And I never saw her using a recipe book either. I was determined to bake this cake on my own a few years ago, and used this recipe from the cookbook: The Real Taste of Jamaica by Enid Donaldson.

10. JAMAICAN SORREL

Notes: If you’ve never heard of sorrel, it’s the official drink of Christmas in Jamaica. Many recipes exist, like this one, but I believe sorrel is best enjoyed with just five simple ingredients: sorrel, water, fresh ginger root, Wray & Nephew Overproof Jamaican White Rum, and sugar. All other ingredients listed in the linked recipe, for me, are optional!

Drop me a line! Let me know which ones you tried. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did!

MY FALL HOME TOUR + DECOR TIPS

MY FALL HOME TOUR + DECOR TIPS

It’s officially Fall in the Henry home. Granted the first day of Fall was a few weeks ago, but with temperatures still averaging the mid seventies, I wasn’t in a rush to move Summer along. My family and I visited HomeGoods recently to start shopping for some decor for our seasonal home makeover. I wrote about it here. It’s taken me a little time to get everything updated, but now that it is, I wanted to take you on my Fall home tour, and offer some tips to help you bring the warmth of the season into your home too.

1. A LITTLE IS ALL IT TAKES
You don’t have to go overboard here. Just a few Fall themed accents are enough to refresh your home for the season. Pumpkins are the season’s go to decor accessory/flavor/food….pumpkin overload anyone?! If you’re not a lover, try accenting your home with deer antlers, leaves, or cotton stems.

Adding some texture like burlap, faux florals, a rust colored toss pillow, or throw gives the room more warmth.

Find Neutral Pumpkin Decor Ideas here and here.

2. DIY
I love adding handmade touches to our home. I came across this idea for my Fall wreath on a recent Pinterest binge session and decided to give it a try!

This DIY Indian Corn Wreath wasn’t as easy as I originally imagined, but it’s still beautiful and worth the effort! The hot glue wasn’t working for me (it was my first time using it), so I opted for industrial glue from The Home Depot (I was a little paranoid that the indian corn wouldn’t stay glued). I also found it easier to glue the corn onto a flat surface rather than directly onto the straw wreath, so I cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of the wreath and glued the corn directly to it, and then glued the cardboard onto the wreath. I waited a day in between these two steps to allow the glue to dry completely. I also coated the corn with clear wood stain to prevent animals from coming up for a nibble at the front door.

3. ADD FRESH FLOWERS
Ok, so now doesn’t exactly seem like the perfect time to be thinking of fresh flowers, but look at the beauty of these potted mums flanking the front door! The perfect complement to our grand wreath!

More from inside…

MY FAVORITE KINDLE FIRE APPS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS

MY FAVORITE KINDLE FIRE APPS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS

We’ve been having such a good time with Chase and Conner, watching them grow and seeing their little personalities blossom. I have to admit, this is my favorite time with them! You see, they were born prematurely at thirty two weeks. Thankfully, they didn’t have any developmental challenges to overcome, but they had to spend three weeks in the NICU before they were cleared to be brought home from the hospital. That first year and a half was very hard for me; recuperating from my C section, caring for two brand new babies, and being very meticulous about their health and nutrition. We also took advantage of the local (and free) resources from our county to help the boys with their cognitive and communication skills.

Over the Summer break I started noticing that the twins became very interested in learning to read. It’s entertaining to see what they’re into, because it usually isn’t the same thing at the same time. For example, when Chase first became obsessed with his letters, Conner was still very much into counting everything he saw! They enjoy using their Kindles so much, and at first I felt guilty about the amount of screen time I allowed. I had a change of heart when I saw how much they were learning from the apps and videos they’ve been frequenting. They can recognize and spell most common sight words, and are talking in full sentences! What’s even better is how they are using what they’re learning to interact with us and with each other.

So with this in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of Chase and Conner’s favorite Kindle Fire learning apps and videos that this mama approves!

This was an early favorite as it taught the boys letter sounds and new vocabulary using short animation and audio that’s actually easy on the ears. Each letter takes on a personality and makes a sound as it is dragged into the correct place in a word. This app really helped Chase and Conner with spelling, and expanding their vocabulary.
Find it here: Amazon iTunes Google Play

This interactive app has a number of games and puzzles to help with counting, sorting, and memory skills. This app helped them most with sorting and memory skills. They also got the book as a gift this Summer, and they were obsessed with it for a few weeks.
Find it here: Amazon

Technically, this isn’t an app, but videos containing letters, and words too, to help preschoolers build their vocabulary. The songs are catchy and repetitive, and the animation makes it fun to hold the boys’ attention. This learning tool is probably my favorite so far. Chase and Conner learned quite a bit how to spell using these videos and also learned the difference between consonants and vowels. I know…they’ve quizzed me at least a hundred times!

The videos are created by Have Fun Teaching, and can be found on YouTube for free. They’re bundled and also available for free on the Kindle Fire (with Amazon Prime).
Find it here: Amazon

I really like this one, because, who doesn’t like Daniel the Tiger?! It helps the boys understand their angry feelings and shows them how to resolve them on their own, which I love! This area is a work in progress, but they love it and watch it quite often!
Find it here: Video App

Most days we get “art” and other scribbles that Chase and Conner bring home from what they worked on in Preschool that day. But last week I was so shocked to see the words “pig” and “mall” scribbled multiple times on the papers they brought home! My babies are reading AND writing too!! They love this app because it helps them learn the names of letters and what they look like by tracing a train down the tracks, and completing other fun train yard activities. Plus let’s face it, which little boy doesn’t like trains?
Find it here: Amazon

Reinforcing what the boys are learning in Preschool is so much easier, thanks to so many great educational apps and videos available for them now on their Kindle Fire. I’m grateful to have these learning tools (and Pinterest) at my fingertips!
